Why do some pairs of tracks sound great together while others sound wrong? This guide lets you hear the answer for yourself. No music theory needed. Headphones help.
When two tracks clash, anyone can hear it. The room feels slightly seasick. That feeling has a simple physical cause. Once you know it, you can predict it.
Every note is a vibration at a certain speed, called its frequency. When two notes play at once, their vibrations add together. If the two speeds line up in a simple way, like 2 to 1 or 3 to 2, the combined sound is steady. Your ear hears steady as pleasant, and the two notes blend into one sound. This is called consonance.
If the two speeds are close but not equal, the sound swells and fades in a pulse. A slow pulse is called beating. Speed the pulse up past about 20 pulses per second and it turns into roughness, a gritty buzz. A semitone (the smallest step on a piano) lands right in the roughness zone. That buzz is the seasick sound.
Try it. Play the unison, then drag the slider slowly. At first you hear a slow wobble you can count. Keep going and the wobble speeds up into a buzz. Now jump to the fifth. Two clearly different notes, and no queasy feeling at all. The fifth is a 3 to 2 ratio, so the two tones lock together.
A full track works the same way, just with more notes. The bassline, the chords, and the vocals are all stacks of frequencies. Layer two tracks whose notes line up in simple ratios and the mix blends. Layer two tracks whose notes sit a semitone apart and every long note grinds against its neighbor.
A key is the set of seven notes a track treats as home. Think of it as the track's color palette. The melody, chords, and bassline all draw from those seven notes, and one of them, called the root, feels like home base.
Two flavors matter for mixing:
Major keys sound bright and open. Minor keys sound darker and moodier, which is why most house and techno lives in minor. Each flavor can start on any of 12 notes, so there are 24 keys in total.
Here is the fact that makes harmonic mixing work: some pairs of keys share almost all their notes. A minor and E minor share six notes out of seven. A minor and C major share all seven. They are the same palette with a different home base (musicians call them relative keys). But A minor and B flat minor, just one semitone apart, share only two notes. Mix them and five of every seven notes grind.
So key compatibility is not a matter of taste. It is a count of shared notes. Count them for every pair of keys and you can rank blends from smooth to trainwreck. Better yet, there is a diagram that does the counting for you.
Arrange the 24 keys so that neighbors share the most notes and you get a clock. Minor keys sit on the inner ring (A). Their relative majors sit on the outer ring (B). Each step around the wheel moves you up a fifth. DJ software calls this the Camelot wheel. Musicians call it the circle of fifths.
The whole system fits in one rule: from any key, you can safely move to its neighbors on the wheel. Same number, other letter is the relative key, with identical notes and a different mood. One step clockwise (+1) goes up a fifth: six shared notes, and it feels like a lift. One step counterclockwise (−1) goes down a fifth, and it feels like settling. Tap a key below. It plays its home chord and lights up where you can go.
Notice what the wheel is not. It is not in alphabetical order, and distance on the wheel has nothing to do with distance in pitch. 8A and 3A sound only one semitone apart, nearly the same pitch, yet their palettes clash worse than any other pair, and they sit five steps apart on the wheel. The wheel sorts keys by compatibility. This is why reading key names alone ("A minor and B flat minor look close!") leads beginners into the worst possible blends.
Enough theory. Deck A loops a bassline in 8A (A minor), the most common key tag in a house crate. Choose what deck B plays under it, press play, and hear what each move on the wheel really does to a blend.
Same key (8A + 8A). Total blend, almost boring. The two patterns sound like one bassline. Zero risk, but also zero movement, so nothing happens in the story.
+1 (9A). The classic. Deck B sits a fifth above. The two lock together and the blend feels like it is climbing. Working DJs lean on this move all night to build energy without anyone noticing why.
−1 (7A). Just as clean, with the opposite feeling. The floor exhales. Use it coming out of a peak.
Relative (8B). The same seven notes, so nothing grinds, but home base shifts and the mood clearly brightens. The cheapest mood flip in the book.
+2 (10A). Five shared notes out of seven. Mostly locked, with a little friction that feels like excitement instead of a mistake. This is the "energy boost" move. It works best when deck B enters over a sparse section.
Semitone (3A). This is the fight from the top of the page. Almost every long note beats against its neighbor. No EQ trick can fix it, because the clash lives in the notes themselves.
Once your blends stop clashing, the real payoff shows up. Moving around the wheel is how you steer the room's energy without touching the volume.

A good night traces a path on the wheel. A warm-up might circle one neighborhood (5A → 6A → 6B → 6A). The build walks clockwise (6A → 7A → 8A → 9A). The comedown steps back counterclockwise and flips to the outer ring. Sets that feel like a journey almost always have this shape, whether or not the DJ would describe it that way.
This table is why "draft me a night" is a solvable problem. Once every track has a key tag, the library becomes a map. Tracks are points, distance on the wheel sets the cost of moving between them, and the energy arc the person asked for ("slow build, peak at 1am, land somewhere warm") sets the route. Drafting a set is finding a path.
The subtler product insight sits in the last column. The same move has different value at different times of night. +2 is an asset at peak time and a liability during warm-up. So Oto's planner should not score compatibility once and forget it. The score has to depend on where you are in the set.
Harmonic mixing is a default, not a law. Knowing when to ignore it is as much a skill as following it.
Drums are mostly unpitched. If you blend during a drum break, an outro with no bassline, or a stripped-back intro, there is nothing to clash. You can jump anywhere on the wheel for free. Working DJs use this escape hatch constantly. Incompatible keys just means: time the blend for a section where only one track is playing notes.
A short, deliberate moment of tension, one phrase of clash before the new track takes over clean, reads as drama rather than error. The difference between a trainwreck and a moment is length and intent. Two basslines grinding a semitone apart for a minute is a mistake. Four bars of friction that resolve into a drop is a technique.
Key detection mislabels a real share of any crate. Most of its errors are harmless, like confusing a key with its relative or its fifth. But sometimes it misses by a semitone, and that one hurts. The habit that protects you: preview every planned blend in headphones, basslines together, before you play it live. Ten seconds of listening beats any tag.
Both escape hatches follow the structure of the track, which means software can find them. "Drums only" is a signal Oto can detect per section, not per track. Every such section is a free doorway between distant spots on the wheel. A planner that knows where the doorways are can draft much bolder key journeys than one that only scores whole tracks.
And since detection confidence varies, key tags should carry a confidence score. A blend planned across two low-confidence tags is exactly where the product should say "preview this one." That builds the by-ear habit from this guide into the workflow itself.
